for thick buildups i alwaysed used that gunk, but for stuff like you say, get one of those green spongey things you wash dishes with, the ones where its rough on one side & spongy on the other, spray a bit of WD40 on the rough bit & have a good scrub!!

i use a product called muckoff which i get from my local bike shop, its brilliant at removing oil and grease etc.. its pink and comes in a squirty thing
