does anyone know if the Sony Explod 444 amp is any good would it be fine to run an xplod 12" 1200w sub and 6x9s?

also what are sony amps like in general a mate of mine was told by halfords that they were crap

If you mean this amp then the answer is a defo' NO. It is a gutless amplifier. Power 6x9s only in bridged mode. I know I used to have one.

also the sony sub wont be 1200w!! it will be something like 250-400w RMS...and sony do do an amp (hexagonal shaped, i believe) that will do 400w RMS, and thats the amp you'll need
However, if you post up what sub your looking at and what the rated RMS is (not the MAX wattage like two squillion watts) then im sure somone will give you an amp that will power it

as for running the 6x9's and sub, i would go for two seperate amps - ie: the one i suggested (have a butchers on caraudiodirect.com etc for it) for the sub and the one above for the 6x9's
