I presumed that, because it worked on my old 95 1.2 Corsa, and it not working on my 99 1.6 Corsa, that it was changed at the facelift. So Vauxhall were a bit slow in picking up the DIY fault reading scam.

ok i did the paper clip test cause the orange light was really annoying me!!
it gave me code 1405 which means 'Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR) valve' but what does it mean in English?
The funny thing is once i did the paper clip test the engine management light went off and hasn't come on since! but now i'm paranoid about this EGR valve
HEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your car has been running lumpy recently too, it could mean that the EGR valve needs a good clean. It gets covered in crap, and a bit of carb cleaner should sort it out. It would be wise to invest in a Haynes manual, and it will explain to you where abouts it is. Its located around the Inlet Manifold.

Hey mo when i did my paperclip test it came back EGR valve so i know all there is to know on the subject
but without goin into it too much if the light is off now and u arnt experiencing any missfires (which is wot i got) then i wouldnt worry about it one bit trust me.
to put your mind at rest ive been runnin with my egr valve disconnected for a month now and my light is on permanent. when i can be bothered i will make a new gasket so i can blank it off then when i connect again the light will go out
any questions u2u me if u like or i will check back here

my EGR valve is misbehaving too - cleaned it twice but still faulty.
They cost £170 new which is steep.
Does blanking it off mean that the car is pretty much certain to fail its MOT on emissions?
If not - how much sshould i expect to pay a garage to blank it off? And would they do it? Any risks in doing so?

its funny u should ask this question actually as its somethin ive yet to find out. the egr valve works by putin some of the exhaust emmisions back into the inlet to reduce some kind of gas. my way of thinkin was it cant be that a great amount or with out it the car wouldnt run right and mine has been running fine since. havin said that when i took my car for mot he said when he first put it on the machine to test emmisions it rocketed and then settled and passed first time. this was when i had the egr symptoms but hadnt yet sorted it.
as for blankin it if i can do it u can do it and i can give u the very simple details to do it ureself i doubt a garage would do it for u they would tell u to get a new one. basically all ure doing is replacin a small gasket that allows the gasses through a small hole with one that has no holes.
id of thought if u keep the original gasket u could just swap it for the test but then again i dont know if it would fail on emmisions if the egr valve is buggered.
something worth finding out definitly i was gettin round to it honest
