I am thinking of getting a Powerflow cat-back system for my Astra this week (probably).

Top Gear in St Albans have quoted me £330 inc. fitting for a normal single exit system.

Thing is, what is the grade of stainless steel I should ask for (the non-rusting type)?

It was from RMS! Think that used to be, or maybe still has something to do with powerflow.

Magnex don't do systems for the mk3 Astra, plus I want to get a 4" slash-cut style tailpipe for my exhaust, something which other off-the-shelf exhaust manufacturers don't seem to do (unless someone can point out to me otherwise).

OK I just had a look at their web site (Powerflow), and it states:

Powerflow systems are fabricated from a combination of 409 grade, 430 grade and 304 grade stainless steel. Material choice for each separate component (silencer casings, end plates, perforated pipes, tail pipes, etc) is made on the bases of suitablity, durability and cost-effectiveness, whilst always ensuring that the product is good enough for Powerflow and its dealers to cover it with a lifetime of ownership guarantee (for original purchasers). Silencers are produced using modern weld free techniques. All seams are mechanically formed to minimise material damage caused by welding and are completely gas tight. The tubing used in most Powerflow systems is 409 grade, which is preferred because of its superior malleability (bending) characteristics. 304 grade tubing is available as a customer option.

So basically, I should ask for 304 grade stainless steel...

bfo have started doing them with a 6x4" oval for astras. I believe its 314 stainless you want.

As far as I know, there is no grade-314......the usual "stainless" steel is grade-304.

Possible alternatives are given as:

301L = A higher work hardening rate grade is required for certain roll formed or stretch formed components.
302HQ = Lower work hardening rate is needed for cold forging of screws, bolts and rivets.
303 = Higher machinability needed, and the lower corrosion resistance, formability and weldability are acceptable.
316 = Higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is required, in chloride environments
321 = Better resistance to temperatures of around 600-900°C is needed…321 has higher hot strength.
3CR12 = A lower cost is required, and the reduced corrosion resistance and resulting discolouration are acceptable.
430 = A lower cost is required, and the reduced corrosion resistance and fabrication characteristics are acceptable.

My system : 16 guage 316 marine stainless steel

vibs says that its more resistant to corrossion than magnex, although he hasnt had any probs with them yet.

Got it booked in for this Friday!

I asked the guy about stainless steel grades, he said they only use 304 now, due to new EC directives or something, and for the fact that the old grades they used were crap!

i have got a powerflow system and i took the cat off and then had the system made with just a back box, no centre silencer! its loud, horriable for motorway driving cos it just droans all the time at bout 4k revs! part from that its good! iaz
