Unless you have it hooked to an amp that has a low-pass filter and is powerful enough then it will die a slow death.

Most home stereo's are only designed to take speakers between 8 and 16 ohms. It will fuck the amp up straight away.

most decent quality home audio amps are powerful enough to run a sub from your car as their RMS ratings dont get carried away with read-well figures! The main problem as mentioned^^^ is the 4ohm thing. Although if you have dual 4ohm coils, could wire it up to 8ohms.
