as above, bro's bought a brand new comp with nothing on so it's basically just hardware together no windows nothing, but when i try to install some of the xp's i've got (wink wink) we just get a error about not all software installed properly or somethingelse or something else jus a list of why the error could be happenin, blue background white writing! why will it not work? do u need a proper retail copy to install onto the computer or some other type of xp for the first install of a windows?

if you bought it second hand then people are not supposed to sell on with operating sytem installed as it will be registered to the previous owner.
just format it, and istall the OS

yea that's fine, it gets as far as formatting to ntfs then starts to install a bit then get the error
i thought as its a custom build and basically just enough running so the components work and u get the start up and go to dos that u perhaps need a special type of 1st install?

Download a Knoppix Live Linux distro (basically boots and runs Linux from the CD, no install). See if that works.
Otherwise my guess is that it's probably overheating, or a dicky hd maybe.

Use a bootdisk and run it from there.
I've experienced problems like this with dodgy RAM.

Exactly the problem, you can have a bad stick which will post fine but will fail when data is put through it.
I've actually got 2 sticks of Corsair 512Mb DIMMs here, they look fine on post but you can't install XP with them in. I replaced then with 1 crabby old stick I had lying around and XP installed with no errors. RAM problems are a b@stard!

I build pcs all the time. I have had this happen to me twice when installing xp just after the format either ntfs or fat you get error messages. Both times it has either been a bad stick or memory or the motherboard.
If it's brand new i would take it back. get them to check the system top to bottom.
hope this helps.
