Hi
Ive just bought a belkin router. It says in the instruction manual to plug modem into WAN port. Problem is my modem is the usb one that comes free with bt-yahoo and obviously will not go into the WAN port which takes an rj45 socket.
Does the above sound right or in my case do i plug the usb modem into my pc cable from my pc to wan port on router. Thing is this defeats the object of my buying a router in the first place as i bought one so other people can access the internet without my pc being swiched on?
What shall i do then....
1) Try and find a usb to rj45 converter (seen some sites selling them for around £100ish!!!!)
2) Buy a new modem which is an rj45 and not usb.
3) Send modem back to novatech as it doesnt say anything about it needing an rj45 type modem to connect to router and not usb and in this case do you think i can get a full refund.

right so this router should be able to do the job of the router+more correct?
if so then send the modem back, you only need the router?
I'm confused, plus the modem you got from bt-yahoo, I'm sure thats LEASED to you and not sold?

the modem is mine as im on a 12 month contract and they give the modem to you for free

it should do, the wan link is normally the port you use to connect the router to the wall (adsl line)

plug the rj-45 cable into your router and the other end into the filter. Thats how i have mine setup.

Hey, I think you can buy adaptors (USB - RJ45) or you can ring BT and ask them for an ethernet modem, they tend just to send you the USB one because many people don't have network cards, they should swap it for you though.

Also a router can only be a router so you will strill need the modem, some modems can roue but they are not very good at it lol.

if its one of them router+switch jobbies (I have one for my adsl)
it should go
adsl in wall -> router-switchbit->machines
If the router is just getting the connection (then its more of a modem really?) then it will be like:
adsl in wall -> modem -> PC connected via USB or ethernet
then of course add a switch and clients on the end of that if you are sharing it

generally you have RJ45 going from a network card to the router, then RJ11 from router to the filter in your phone socket.

if its the 54g jobbie that i have got then yes you need a modem still. rj45 from the modem to the router. is a peice of pish to setup, almost plug and play and then just customize the settings to your requirements. Oh yeah make sure you put either an encription key or mac address filtering on, or even both, otherwise anyone near your house can just access your network and abuse your internet conection!

Sounds like you have a 'router' only - you need an ADSL ethernet modem to plug into the WAN port on the router. Either that, or have the router replaced for an 'ADSL Modem/Router' - which plugs directly between your phone line and network (to which your other machines are connected).
