i aint read all this thread, but u tend to only need to do it on older cars where you want to try and match the revs up hence making it easier to change gear and makes the gear box last longer(i think thats correct!)

Isued to do this around new brighton mainly on decelerations to go into rounabouts just made me look like a nob

yep syncromesh in gearboxes nowadays deal with this, but doing still doing it will prolong the life of the box and its syncro's
