How do you know he's not yet seen the thread? Does he have to post on here once he's seen the thread, just to keep you informed?
Maybe he's browing the board at the moment as a Guest..

If it's such a random thought, then why make a post dedicated to the subject? If you're that interested in his personal life then why not just drop the lad a friendly u2u?
