right... engine symptons :
start's up fine, runs very smooth no unusual noises from engine
engine not rattly, isn't making car vibrate or jerk on idle or rough idle etc.. everything smooth, then all of a sudden the car will chug a bit then cut out like revs just dropping suddenly.
When warm it's very smokey, not a cooland smoke but a sort of grey smoke but doesn't smell like anything out of the ordinary ie no coolant or burning oil smell.

what do you all reckon? why's it stalling, and why the smoke?

thing is, with my experience of gone head gaskets, u'll get the white / blue smoke out exhasut not a grey / dark smoke + u'll get a coolant smell and the car would still run it wouldn't start run fine then cut out, normally i would think the dark / grey smoke would be overfueling but it smelt a bit to much but not over fueling enough to turn smoke or cut out just smelt like it had no cat

does the black/grey smoke not signify knackered turbo

rev's dropping can becaused by something as simple as a dodgy coil

the thing thats wierd is that it could be simple, ie ICV fucked, need cleaning or replacing as it isnt catching the rev's. the smoke could be overfueling. i'm just confused as it is sooo smooth then suddenly cuts out, and smokes a bit on idle
black/ grey can be turbo's but it can also be excessive fuel.

Overfuelling? - if it's running very very rich, you'd get grey smoke. Check temperature sender (might not be picking up that the engine's warm, thereby continually enriching up the mixture when it doesn't need enriching. Check lambda sensor too. Might be telling the ECU the engine's running lean when it's not and over-fuelling. What do the exhaust fumes smell like? Excessive petrol smell indicates over-fuelling. Also check spark plugs for signs of over-fuelling. And what about fuel consumption?

i wouldnt worry much about the rev's dropping, things like that are easily solved

as for the smoke however, you'll only get the overfuelling smoke with heavy throttle use

if its smoking at idle and just trundling along the road it'll be knackered turbo's

see fuel is a defo possibility, it smokes on idle, but smokes ALOT when revved, indicates maybe not turbo as if smokin on idle turbo's not being used. There is not a excessive petrol smell though that's the thing. just smells like any turbo car that's been decatted.
would overfueling perhaps cause it to cut out?

with knackered turbo's would that cause it to smoke on idle though ? as they aren't being used?

U could always nip down to your local garage and ask them to do a CO and HC check. Overfuelling wouldn't cause it to cut out unless it was really severe. R u sure it's not burning any oil?

could be the egr valve sticking, this causes my revs to drop sometimes and cut out.

rev's dropping as car is smooth seem as tho that could be fixed ok, just the smoke i'm worried about. It was at night with a floodlight on car so i'm not 100% on colour, but to me it looked just dark / grey, and i smelt no oil. Say it was burning oil.. what would this mean?

Either worn rings or valve stem seals/guides. Could be turbo problem too, but I have no experience with turbo engines

looks like a fair amount to fix then, just annoyin as a uk tt costs me 1300 to insure, a jap will cost me 2600 i want a uk and if it was simple problem i'd prob buy this one! bodywork etc. mint with 18's super drager etc..

andy, worn rings / stem seals / guides, wouldn't this cause the engine to idle rough?

No, I don't think it would - not unless so much oil was getting through it was affecting combustion in the cylinders

ok, so theres 3 possibility's
overfueling.. not a smell of fuel so doubt that.
turbo's gone..and something else causing the cut out possible
and piston rings etc.. the 2 are prob gonna take away the cheapness of the car unless i fix them myself, i'd happily do turbo's it's just expensive to buy new /rebuilt ones. not touched a bottom end of a car before! specially a V6!!
