i have 17s on a 5dr lowerd , about to put on -40mm springs, original dampers, the wheels are masitaly vt5, would like to know which arch mods i should carry out. dont want the wheels to rub, theres a bit of wight with MDF in the boot from my build, and i'd like to get at least 2 ppl in the back and its not going to rub, and is it ok to take out the front inner arch, without the engine fucking up with all the dirt getting up, or do i not need to take it out, all help would be appreciated i have no clue where to start

my shocks are quite high as std, my mum had a 5 door whick h is a 98 merit 1.4, i'd say on that car its about 40mm lower than mine as std, but its still soft and bouncy so 17s wouldnt even go on it coz its bouncy so wud rub on corners and everything, but i have a good 3 / 4 cm clearence from the top of my tyre to the outer arch trim , on the back anyways, not tried a wheel on the front yet

My mate oli (corsa5dr) had 17's down 40mm

All that i did for him was to debolt the rear arches. Was ok on standard shocks; was spot on when he upgradded them/

Those pics were with Apex 40mm springs. I changed them for bilstein shock/springs so it sat lower and handled better.

With the Apex i could carry a full load, just debolted the arches at the back.

With the bilsteins it rubbed with 2 in the back, didnt bother doing any arch work to stop it because i sold the car soon after.

Didnt handle too well on just Apex springs and 17s. Much improved with the Bilstein setup. I had PAS yeah but with 17's it didnt feel like it

It rubbed with a full load on the bilsteins yeh, that was down a true 40 unlike the Apex which sat high. Bit of arch trimming ot knocking out and itd be fine. Loads of people here have 17s -40mm on a 5door. KrisTD was down 60mm.

yes, i was down 60mm on 17's on my 5 door, but i dont recommend it, ive seen the light and changed that setup.

firstly i stuck the archs on without the bolts, this helped a bit, but it still rubbed like buggery, so then i thought, i know ill cut some of the metal beihnd the plastic arch away, this in turn also helped a bit, but they still rubbed shitloads. then i realised they were rubbing on the inner arch, bollox, not much you can do about that, but as it was melting my tyres i had too. in the end i severly limited the travel on the rear suspention, worked a treat, but it was a very bad idea for several reasons
1. it was so uncomfortable its untrue, basically there was no travel at the rear
2. cos there was no travel i managed to bend 2 of my 17's
3. it was putting major stresses on the suspention turrets and shocks.

in the end i rasied the back upto 40mm and put 16's back on.

oh btw, i had to do the above mods to get the 17's on with a 35mm drop, then i changed to 60mm afterwards.
