laptop displays can't display anything higher than there maximum res, which in most cases is 1024x768

Yup, as Paul says, it'll be fixed to the screen size. Most TFTs/LCDs have a maximum, optimum resolution - lower and the quality is often reduced, higher and you'll 'go off the screen'

Same with TFT Monitors for normal PC's, most high-end ones (17" up) are 1280x1024, but 15" are 1024x768...

My personal view is that you dont want to use a screen at a res thats higer than 1024x768 cos you can't se a fucking thing on the screen cos its all sooo tiny!

yup i have my 19" set to 1280x1024 and its mint dont have any problem what so ever If i have it at a lower resolution, the icons/text look to big
But back to the topic, TFT/LCD screens have only one size to choose from. And ive only seen very expensive TFT/LCD screens (for desktop pc's) that have resolutions of 1280x1024 or higher

I'll be running 2 19" monitors @ 1600 x 1200, not used to big chunky text!
