If i was to buy one of these engines for a transplant which would be the best for tunning. I would be looking around 120bhp-130bhp.
thanks.

they are both good for tuning, but the 1.6 is better, it alsow has an extra 16bhp over the 1.4 to begin with

if you looking to mod the engine. than the Gsi is the better block, is well effected by any mod. a good inlet manifold, chip and full zorst system, youd be looking at 130ish

we'd all have Gsi's if insurance wasnt so f**king expensive!
so if you can afford the 1.6 have it!

1.4s can get 130+ BHP easily.
1.6 is obviously a better choice as its a larger capacity block and to get more than 130bhp on a 1.4 i think u have to spend ££££ on internal work and using a 1.6 bottom end for strenghth (?)
1.6 engines are v-tunable tho. Good choice. XE engine is more tunable and 150bhp as standard

20xe cossie cast is 150bhp as standard.
16xe is 109(gsi) and 106(sport)
inlet manifold set you back about 400-500, adds about 35% if chipped.
insurace on 1.4 is group 6, 1.6 is group 9 poss higher

Any XE is 150bhp as standard, regardless of Coscast. The earlier pre cat ones had 156bhp, but taking the cat off a later one would see the same power.
In reply to the original thread go for a 1.6, there is no sunbstitute for cubes.

You still aren't!! Coscast heads have no bearing on power! They are the same design, just of a better quality.

thats what you get for being online at work! lol. all in all 1.6 is the better bet imo.
cossicast head was on later models, unsure if any available with cat. but to my knowledge you can remove cat on all valvers

Coscast heads came on the first of the 20xe's, from then on they just crop up at random in any car, there is no real hard and fast rule about it.
You are right about the 1.6 though!

The early coscast heads had larger valve guides than the ones that crop up later though

^This is true, they still made the same power though
