just use a grip wrench and give it a sharp twist and should come off a treat if not heat it up with a hair drier and try again

there was no way that thing was coming off, maybe i'm not strong enough lol. I even had 2 cans of red bull yesterday as well! LOL!

Gonna get some mole clips tonight (is it clips? or snips?) Should work a treat.

Cheers

angle grinder! Thats what i used to fit my knob! It makes a lot of mess but just keep going until you see sparks which is metal! Seriously, i just covered the whole area with sheets and it took me 3minutes with a 4.5" grinder

Seriously, dont fanny about get a grinder on it. Just cut around the top section (like you'd take the top off a pineapple LOL) and then just keep cutting lower and lower. DONT cut too near the lift up part! Their is a spring underneath that should pop off when you remove the knob.

I just got a massive old sheet. Cut a slit in the middle of it, lay it in my car with the knob through the slit oww err and got errm grinding away

Forgot all about the cover mate. Sorry 'again'.

Had the window smashed on the courtesy car this morning so wasn't thinking very straight. I'll have to give it to you on Sat when you come down. I'm at HMS Belfast tomorrow on an away day.

The lump your picture shows is all plastic and will come off when hacksawed. The top of the stick will be small enough to fit into your new knob. Trust me. I had the same doubts but it turned out fine.

Consult this link.....

lovely mate, thats exactly what someone else on here told me. Gotta grind down the rubber first, then theres a layer or plastic which needs to come off, this will reveal the sprint around the metal pole which slips into my knob....

ta for the link

if you look at the pics closely, you can see shiny bits. It looks like metal, but im not too sure. Could be plastic though.

What do you think?

Worry not! The metal part you see is the spring needed for the 'lift up' reverse mechanism. The rest of the top part is definitely plastic. Hacksaw it and it will be revealed in all its crappiness. Have faith!

If you begin at the top, you will eventually discover the plastic part has a cross-shaped structure and is very thick. You will have to persevere until you have cut it down using a hacksaw or, as someone has suggested, a dremel. Cut in the grooves beside the crossed part until you have formed a cross shape cut of your own. Then a pair of grips/pliars/whatever and twist/pull/swear until the bugger comes free in pieces. It will look messy but always console yourself with the thought that it will be replaced with something better that will also mask the mess.
Remember, the top part is very thick and requires alot of patience.

some good news, and some bad news...

Good news is, the new knob is on and works a treat, and looks good too. Thanks for all the help people.

The bad news? Damn car wouldn't start, had it running the other day and did about 7miles in it, been sitting for 1 day and now won't start. Looks like a new battery i think.
