how high your temp guage going ? Fan on mine cuts in about 96-98 and takes it down to 90...
If its just overheating then check that the fuse for the rad fan is ok first
next unplug your fan switch and join the two pins together with a bit of wire ( with ign off! ) and switch ign on to see if fan works, if it does replace fan switch. if not post again...

the thermostat may not be working and mite need replacing if the fan doesnt even come on
keeping the fan on constantly will knacker out the motor on it quicker but like u said that could be solve with a switch
i changed my thermostat and radiator after some radweld fucked up my cooling system NEVER use that shite ever!!!!!

fan switch down bottom of radiator on drivers side ( you cant miss it ! only thing on it with wiring )
prob cost about 10-15 for a new one... ( fit yourself , v easy )
thermostat more difficult to fit if its the one behind inner cambelt cover, dunno what garage would charge for this 40-50 maybe ? shouldnt take more than 30-40 mins to do thou...
is the rad top hose hot if so the thermostat is open and prob not the cause of probs, i would change switch if in doubt as you say fan not running...
does the fan work thou when the wiring plug connectors joined together ?

cost me 60 quid at a garage near me for them to change thermostat that included price for new one aswell - garage should be able to sort getting the part for you Or you can get the part yourself from a Vauxhall spares parts centre

its the plug on the rad you unplug, leave the plug on the fan.
join the pins on the plug with a bit of wire with the ign off thou...
fan+fingers=
then switch the ign on and see if the fan works.
