Right, 3 people all go out for a meal, the total bill is exactly £25.
so the 3 people hand over a £10 note each to the waitress.
She comes back with 5 one pound coins, gives each person a pound back and keeps £2 as a tip.
this means each person has paid £9 for their meal, making the total bill £27.
the waitress only took a £2 tip, so where did the other pound go???

or 30 - 3 - 2 = 25
30 = total
3 = what they got back
2 = tip
25 = bill
they didnt pay 27 for meal, they paid 25 and gave a 2 pound tip and all got a quid back
=30

yeah i kinda guessed that, especially considering theres a whole thread of em! I just meant that it makes sense once it had been explained. Although i guess thats self explanitory. Now im confusing myself.

Just been working this out wit my dad. The bill including the tip is £27, and they got £3 change. Solved

So they paid £9.33 for the meal. £9.33 x 3 = £28 and a £2 tip for the waitress makes £30.
