Vauxhall have told me that my engine is fuc**d and needs replacing. they will charge £1700 for a rebuild or £2000 for a new engine. Another garage has said it might not need replacing, but it sounds rough as f**k and they didn't seem to know what the problem was. Might be the gasket on the manifold accoding to vaux, but they say the clyinder head needs to come off to find out what the problem is (they changed there story about replacing the engine for £2000 when i told them i was getting a second opinion).
I don't want to spend £500+ reparing the engine to find out that it is still not running well, so in short how much would i be looking at paying for a 1l 12v engine (second hand), and then what would the fitting costs be?

Well I paid £1600 for a new engine with 5k on it for my GSi when it went bang so yeah it seems alot!

Dont take it to Vaux they charge the earth!

Get an engine from a scrap write off and fit it yourself, wont cost more than £400/500 all in IMO!

lol, i really won't be able to fit it myself, i don't even have the right tools let alone a crane to get the engine out, and the new in.

how long would it take for a garage to fit it?

i'm only 18 so a 2.0 conversion or a LET is out of the question.

Even a smaller conversion would be a pain to insure. I just want to fix the car so i can sell it.

Rent a crane from a hire place and buy a huge crack bar to get the bolts out

Shouldnt take any more than 5/6hours to someone who knows what there doing!

I'm 19 and changed my engine with a little help of my dad in a day. We didn't use a crane, just a huge troley jack we lent of the mechanic next door. You just undo all the bolts supporting the engine/gearbox, lift the car high enough to drag it out from under.

We fitted the engine and plumbing day 1, I finished it off day 2. We only used a £27 tool kit from halfords. And didn't bother reading the haynes.

Yours is only a 1.0 lite so should need more than 2 people to drag it out.

When vauxhall said they will replace the engine, they will only change the block. source one from a scrappy.
