pmsl @ marcus

power - do you have a spare power cable instill ya tower (not inside hightower off police acadamy) if so - plug that in, power sorted, if not, u will need a power splitter cable

as for other cable, i dunno what you have in ur pc, how many hard drives, how many cd drivers???

I have my hard drive on the master of the IDE, CD Rom drive on the slave.

So I plugged the CD Writer in on the master of another IDE cable, and put the power cable in but its not working.

Ive got a few different power cables, but I dunno which one to use

make sure the pin selector on the back of the drive unit is set to master or auto detect

Also, when you boot up...does any lights flash on the drive? if so you have power and the problem lies in the IDE cable or the bios/windows not detecting it.

If it does flash or you cant hear it spin up etc then power cable is dodge (also try the drive in a different pc to see if it works etc).

If you have power, then during start up press F2/F1 or DEL keys quickly, to get into the bios. Then select the option that allows you to look at what drives are connected. If a CDRW doesnt come up, then the IDE cable is screwed (check connections etc etc), if it pops up in the bios, then go to the exit menu and save the settings. Boot into windows.
If windows doesnt see it, then there are a million in one reasons why it isnt picking it up. Check out the manufactures website for drivers (just incase special drivers are needed) or any solutions etc

also, a note to anyone that has a CDrom and Hard-drive on the same IDE cable...the Hard-drive will fall to the IDE speed of the CDRom drive (ie: ATA 33/66). Therefore slow access to the harddrive.

You should always pair hard-drives/cd-roms together, to overcome this problem
