Am I right in thinking that NTL bought the residential side of them?

NTL brought C&W out, 100%. Thats why NTL has two cable systems, the C&W system (known has langley) and the NTL (CableTel) system (known as Bromley).
Its also why, NTl has two of bloody everything - ie: two customer databases etc. Also, if you in a C&W area, your broadband will be available via either a set to box (if you have the TV also) and a Standalone cable modem. Also, the Tv system is generally better in C&W areas as the network is more up-to-date and offers loads of advantages over the CableTel network.
hope this helps mate

C&W was the original company, then NTL bought them out. So all the same equipment as ours hasnt changed. Saying that it went from Cable -> NTL Digital just top box i think
