Basically my engine management light was coming ona lot and i couldnt accelerate up to 60-70 in any amount of time. so i went to a local garage where an ex vauxhall sparky now works, he read the engine codes and diagnosed that my air flow meter is fcuked.

been quoted £320ish for all new one and fitting! This happend to anyone else?

what engine is it?

the flow meter is usually just a thin wire that does it's business, so is easily damaged.
you can fubar them by spraying carb cleaner up your inlet before the meter

well, it's a bit of wire that does the measurement, but it's in it's casing to fit into the air trunking, and then there is the electronic bits to enterpret the signal and convert it into a form that the ecu understands.

£320 does sound like a piss take to me.
you could get a whole new second hand engine for that.

if you find out what type of flow meter your engine uses, and if the same type was used on other models, then you could try a wanted add for a second hand part.

also worth noting is that the meter itself could be fine, and it's possible that the connector is not entirely as it should be. may be worth spraying wd40 into the wiring connection and giving the wiring harness a quick once over.

the AFM's are v expensive.

As suggested I advise checking and cleaning all the connections to the AFM to see if that solves the problem.

I had a similar problem with mine. Car was cutting out and over revving.
A mate had a look at it and gave the connectors and wires and stuff a good clean and sprayed wd40 on the electrical bits.
Did the trick and never had the problem again.
I did get a quote for a new one incase I need it and the cheapest he could do me for was £190. It would be a bit more than that from the dealers so it is an expensive part to repalce.
The second hand option sounds a good idea.
Give your cars details to a scrappers and see if they've got a match. Trouble with that tho is you dont know if that ones fooked till you put it on.
Give it a good clean first and take it from there.
If you have look inside it though and one or all the wires are broken then a clean wont be enough

Hope that helps chuck

My air flow meter went on my coupe turbo. I went to the spares desk at the local vauxhall dealer, paid £120 for a new one and fitted it myself!

£375 is like getting gay-raped mate!

Where ur airbox is, there is a pipe that comes off it, it has a wiring connector going to the section of pipe which is the air flow meter.
