take the engine and gearbox out in one piece from underneath.
get yerself some sort of engine trolly to drop it onto... makes life alot easyer.

A trolley helps, but they're not that heavy, drop it onto a trolley jack and pull it out from under.

Yes, quite high about 40cm.
Use big planks of wood to chock it up under two axle stands...
We used three jacks as well. Pretty straight forward.

if your only changing the engine leave the gear box where it its
dissconect everything
losesen engine to gearbox bolts
loosen the engine mount
attach crane
take the strain undo the bolt rest of way and lift out put a pice of wood on the cross moember "slampanel" so it doesnt scratch it

^ no way man its a pain in the arse to take an engine or gearbox out if u dont take them out in 1 piece.... the fecken battery tray gets right in the way.
not to mention the crap of having to get the input shaft back into the clutch in the car.
maybe i'm missing something but its only a few extra bolts to take the gearbox and engine out in one piece... even the haynes mentions that its is easyer to take them out together......
i changed the gearbox in my yoke form a 4 speed to a five speed and i left the engine in and just took the gearbox out and it was a nightmare to work in the cramped engine bay... such a waste of time doing it that way.

if your leaving the gearbox where it is
ie just changing the engine
out the top is the easyest way
engine and gearbox change drop it out of the bottom
i have done this so i know.
and i have done both ways.

^ im right hes wrong ... only messin......
i suppose if ya take the engine out the top way makes it easyer but i still think over all the the both of them out from underneath the way the manufacturer intended..... and getting the that input shaft to mate up in the car scares me.

input shaft is a little fiddly
but if your just changine the engine itself
then out the top is best cos if you gonna drop it out with the gearbox youve gotts pull the drive shafts out, gear linkage etc new g/box oil and possibly split the balljoints.

if you are going out the bottom, you can tip the engine forward slightly and drag it out of the wheel arch.
