a standard LET will be more reliable than an old engine with slap on mods.

rebuild, any engine that age is likely to have high miles etc. Rebuild it with new parts if needed etc and bobs your uncle.

air filter, cams, vernier pulleys, nice exhaust with manifold and a creamy chip

mine made nearly 170 with the above except the chip

LETs are no more unreliable than XE's.

Just got that reputation by numerous kevs whacking the boost up without doing any internals untill it goes pop.

yes but mine is a heap of shit also still had the gash powerflow exhaust then.
