Yes they did make them in plastic later in the life of the engine. If yours is plastic then it wont be acceptable as an exchange item if you wanted a chrome one

Just the normal polishing normally does them with a bit of chrome cleaner

Chrome is easier to clean than polished ones too

Cheers for the input there lee as said if you just have a polished one you need to repolish from time to time otherwise it goes dull with chrome a quick wipe over should suffice
