I think if you're overtaking things they know you're going fast.
Plus if they really want to they can average your speed by timing how long it takes you to get between marks on the road. Most areas popular for speeding have small squares painted every so often.

Have you ever seen the big white painted blocks on motorways. afaik these are for helicopters. They time you from one to the next. They are at set distances apart.

Also they didnt shine the light on my car till I was off the motorway and entering another motorway....after a few seconds they moved on...I was travelling at the national speed limit at this point...however I cant be sure if they didnt follow me for a while...my thinking is though if they did monitor my speed they would have stayed with me till a police car arrived....I hope anyway...

I know the sh*t feeling, i was coming off a roundabout earlier and booted it not thinking anything of it, then realized there was a police car following! i was doing way over 30 so i had to try and slow back down as inconspicuously as possible! didn't pull me luckily.

they prolly thought you'd stolen the car going at that speed, maybe they were shining the light so they could glimpse your number plate to run a check

yeah im thinking this as if they would have clocked my speed etc they would have stayed till a police car was directed to my vicinity to stop me...I stayed on the motorway for a good 15 mins after this and no police car tyrned up.....

they use a police helicopter to catch speeding motorcyclists on the roads around buxton, as that many people have died speeding over there. some brilliant private roads around there though, in the middle of knowhere too

theory: they were looking for a stolen car, and travelling up the m-way shining light on every car to see what make/model/colour it was to see if it fitted the bill of what they were looking for.

id say that police choppers have excellent equipment for detection of cars. they need it they have thermal imaging and what not else so im sure they have a speed device unit of some sort. however i have a friend who happens to be a helicopter operative so i will get more info regarding this!

You don't need fancy equipment.
Just time how log it takes to drive between the markers on the road, then do some maths. Easy.

well surely they would have stayed with me if they intended to pull me for speeding...and not just left after 30 seconds...
I hope anyway...

its very true what John siad thay all over the place them blocks now!
I wouldnt worry too much whether they averaged your speed to 120 or if they caught you at 100 cause either way its a ban! I'd just worry and hope they didnt clock your speed or get it on camera!
