Anyone know what they are. Got one of my course-works back and it says i haven't used any footnotes. I always thought that was a footer

it means that you cite at the bottom of teh page rather than at the back in a reference section

Where you talk about widgets*, but don't detract the flow of the sentance explaining what they are.

* widget - small device for doing something special

No - I just typed 'footnote' in to Google Image search and picked a few that came up. Its nothing special, just a comment that expands on what you're saying, that you can't put in paragraph text because it would interupt the paragraph.
