I get quite a good mix actually.

most of it is network based, pretty much deal with cisco and nothing else. With servers its normally solaris (back office trading stuff), we do have a few desktop contracts but its all simple windows stuff.

I finished uni this year, got a 2:1 from a Bsc Business Computing degree. On my year out, I worked for BT Broadband as a test engineer. With my degree and a good years experience under my belt, getting a job wouldn't be too difficult???

I still haven't managed to get a job in this industry! Poor me.

When i finnished my A-Levels with a...

B - IT
B - Electronics

I had a couple of choices open to me....

Do i goto uni or do i do a modern apprenticeship.

I was sick and tired of theory based all the time, i knew uni would be a laugh but i decided in the end i wanted to get out in the real world earn a wage and get more qualifications at the same time so thats why i decided to to a modern apprenticeship.

Then to decide what job i wanted to do with the rest of my life.....

IT - I enjoy it, i find fixing pc's, troubleshooting on pc's, setting up databases, spreadsheets, networking .... fun and not that challenging somthing that I DID NOT ENJOY at all was the programming side (which i was lead to belive that most IT jobs involved was programming)

so i knocked that idea on the head.

Electronics - i enjoyed electronics, was quite good and fault finding etc and enjoyed it.... but again wasnt that fussed about design etc which is where the money is etc etc so i knocked that idea on the head..

Anyway i knew i wanted to do somthing with electrical/electronic trade.....

With the limited knowlage i had from careers teachers (they were fucking useless) I decided to apply for electrial electronic apprenticeships....

Got a job with Bosch as an Electrical Electronic apprentice at 17, nearly 18.

Started my appreniceship just after i turned 18 and spent a year in college full time on £8000 p.a

Now im into my 2nd year and im on £12.8k and im with 2 maintenence electrical techs and they are teaching me shitloads...

my sallary will rise to roughly £22k in the 4th year and with a bit of luck i can get a £32k a year tech's job when i finnish my apprenticeship and maybe progress onto engineers jobs where most of them are on £45k-65k BASIC.

Dont know if i have done the best decision, only time will tell....

But all of my mates that went to uni last year fked up big style, 2 failed, 1 dropped out, 2 scrapped passes, when they come out of their uni courses they will be oweing £15-20k? on student loads, compared to me i will have a £50-90k house being paid for and getting on the property ladder at 21ish and hopefully earning a decent wage and i will have the ability to do electrical hobbles on the side... £100 to fit and wire up a shower, do that in 3-4 hours....

Time will tell lets repost back in here in 10years time and see where we all are GOODLUCK WE ALL NEED IT
