its a big job...

you will be fitting new cam belt so yes timing has to be spot on

drain coolant & oil
strip & remove inlet manifold
remove exhaust manifold
remove rocker cover
remove timing belt & fan belt
undo head bolts in sequence
remove head
check head with metal ruler see if its warped... if it has - skim it...
either way on head - is good idea to replace valve stem oil seals n such
clean block surface & head
set pistons so piston 1 is TDC
fit new headgasket (replace locating studs in block first)
put on cylinder head in right position
put the rocker ontop of the cylinder head with timing mark on the cam sprocket pointing upwards
fasten down the cylinder head bolts in sequence (new head bolts advised to be used) and tighten to correct torque setting
fit new timing belt ensuring timing is correct (locating arrow on cam sprocket & crank sprocket all pointing up & matching locating marks on block/back of cambelt plastc housing)
fit rocker cover with new rocker cover gasket
fit the other bits & bobs (fanbelt pully, inlet & outlet manifolds, ht leads, coolant pipes, etc etc...)
make sure everything is fine & sorted
fill oil & coolant
start engine...

thats just from top of my head from when I did my 1.4 8v...

garage will cost about £150-£200 to sort it, unless you know a mate of a mate who can do it for cost price of parts & a few quid on labour

headgasket set can be got for about £25 from local motorfactors - vaux your lookin nearer £70 for it...

you risk doing damage to the engine - bearings, crank, etc...

how 'creamy' is it? heavy or a slight whisp which you really have to look for??

also how much coolant is it using??
