I have my laptop dual-booting XP and Linux. Whoever said it's not very good for a desktop is an idiot. Aslong as you're running KDE or Gnome or something that gives you a proper GUI, it's fine as a desktop OS.

Chris, there are a few versions of Free Lite Linux which wil run directly off a CD rom, and not install any software on your pc. i have a copy at home, cant remember what its called tho.
Do a search on the net, there are free versions about.
give it a go, and see which you prefer.

http://www.dynebolic.org/ is an example of a free cdrom booting OS
Ive pld about with this version, and its not very linux'y.

i run linux (debian)
i had it as my second pc but then my main pc broke (xp) and have used linux ever since.
found to do some things you have to actually think what you are doing.
stability wise it is far more stable.
lots of programs are available for free for it. virus not so much of a problem as hardly any are written for linux.
friend who is a bit dippy with computers she still managed to use my pc while i was out.
i have used the cdrom versions before to recover a harddisk

sod linux - aye, its great for hosting and doing server jobs but it seriously lacks in the desktop area. Especially considering you need to re compile kernels etc etc to install drivers and software - whereas windows/mac, click it installs 
see mac is where it is all at  if you want to run PROPPER software - ie: photoshop, protools, editing software like avid etc then macs out run anything.
however, both mac and linux are in the same boat (linux slightly worse off than mac tbh) in terms of any decent software to make use of the different os/s (both based on unix i know, but both run on different processors) - and therefore it will be an age before we see games and decent software of both systems.
