You can combine venting, drilling and grooves, as above.
The vents are the little slots around the outside of the disc, which are either fed by air coming in from the centre near the hub (bit with the bolts on) or the drilled holes. All to do with cooling as brakes need to run at a particular temperature. Too cold is fairly bad as some pads - particularly those made with fast road / track in mind - don't work as effectively. Too hot (hence the drilling and vents) is disasterous as pads will overheat and glaze, ie. go shiny and useless.
Thats where the grooves come in - to slice of any glaze that may occur.
