just want to know whos had engine rebuilds, in particular the 1.6 16v, but any will do!
as my C16XE is in need of one really soon! drinking/burning and leaking oil and so i want to find out more info about it from people who have had it done before i go ahead

if you can just list the engine model with current milleage, cost of rebuild, were it was done, what was done exactly and main reason it needed it and any other advice or info, thanks

oh yes ive had a good chat with him in past and he's cleared a few things up for me

i want to know how many other people on here have had it done and any other advice or help

i gave mine a top head overhall a while back, if thats anyhelp, engine had done 130k, changed a few rockers and cleaned the tappets as well as fitting a new head gasket

buy a haynes everything you need to know is in there... if you cant do it after reading that leave it to someone who can...

its not difficult... the only issue i'd have is the hassle of gettign all the bits together but just talk to autovaux.co.uk and they should be able to suply you with em...

the 16v vaux lumps are easier to rebuild than most people would have you think... for me anyway

yes i have a Haynes manual, ive literally read the whole thing!!
just trying to get as much info as possible, i would love to do it myself, but i lack experience and i dont think i have all the tools needed to do the job properly myself!

tools are 70% of the job!! sure ya can buy most of the tools ya would need in any good tool shop..... the main thing is to have confidence in yourself

if you understand the haynes then pull the fooker appart

From my experience always expect the worse and budget for it, my engine re-build cost nearly twice what i thought it would!!!!!

Mind you i didnt build it standard though, so the extras went on ARP's SBD idlers, Oversized pistons, lightening and balancing etc, porting and polishing

I've done 5 top end rebuilds on these now. It's cheaper to buy a complete X16XE and stick the inlet and exhaust on it than rebuild and the hassle of running in too.

It's all pretty simple, replace stems and lap the valves in. clean the mating surfaces I find scotchbrite pads are good. If you feel brave while it's stripped down you could smooth out the massive step on the bottom of the inlet ports where the valve seats have been cut in. and put back together.
Then stick a X16XE bottom end on that's low mileage, as there's numerous astras, vectra etc.. you can pic them up easier than a 1.4.
New timing belt water pump etc...
Weekends work.

To clean tyhe heads of the valves, just get a drill bit brush and strap the drill down, or fit it to the bench grinder and then clean off the heads to get the cr*p off.

Also try and get a spare set of lifters and soak them in petrolfor a month

thanks everyone for help and advice, but....

how much would a GOOD full-rebuid cost from a garage??
and so, how much would i save if i do it all myslef, bearing in mind i have to get some tools also??

right now i dont think i will be doing it myself.. but if i do it will have to be much more later on in year when i have free time but i dont think engine will last that long its getting a bit worse each month!!

v-tuning quoted me around £1000 (estimate) for a full rebuild a few months ago, it included everything being replaced from top to bottom and uprating were needed to accompany power mods in future...

is this a good price??
i can get it cheaper elsewere but i have heard V-tuning are very good and have a lot of experience, but i dont know if they offer any gaurantees/warranty on the work done? coz the last thing i want is for it to go pop a few days or months later!!
