Holla

Engine is out at the moment and i've spotted what I believe to only be surface rust on the battery tray.

Buttttt I don't know how to treat it, what methods to use, can anyone give me some steps or point me in the right direction? What will I need etc?

get a grinder with a soft pad on it and grind it and paint it.

grind it, then prime, and finally paint?

grind it back to bare meatl, rust treat it, then prime and paint. rust treatment can be brought from halfords and places like that

You can treat it with special rust inhibitor but you would need loads on that area plus its not so critical. I would just grind it and paint as Mark says.

wire brush, then locite stuff, then i repaint after that, does a good job
