What costs are associated with importing cars?
Looking at importing brand new cars from America.
Obviously you've got the shipping cost. But what import duties are you liable for? Are there any other costs?

All cars under 10 years old have to have the SVA test. This may mean also changing lights, adding fog lights and doing this that and the other. Can be costly if you don't know what you're doing. As a rule of thumb, duty paid on a car imported from overseas is around 10%.
Shipping a car from the East Coast of the states is around £500 - £700 as an average. You'll need to take out cargo insurance as well, but that's only about £100 I think. That's usually as private traffic via car carrier from, say the likes of Hual or Wallenius Wilhelmsen who operate to Southampton.
Containerising is also a common practice and you'll only need a 1 TEU to fit a few cars in. An FEU will take about 3 to 4 cars dependant upon size. Can't remember pricings for container traffic as they vary so much.
I am still undecided on whether I shall import my Z28 Camaro or buy one from a recommended dealer when the time comes. I have found a reputable source now, so will probably buy one already imported.
There are also other small fees like ships agency fees, wharfage fees, stevedores fees etc. They are relatively small though, but can add up a bit.

Dont forget 17.5% Vat on top of the 10% import duty
22% import duty if its a commercial vehicle which includes pickup trucks.

Also, if it was made after Jan 1st 1997, find out if there is a model report available for it first, as otherwise you may have trouble registering it.
