bought my 1.2 8v merit with a K&N filter on it...I can get around 300 miles from a full tank it not ragging it, but a lad I know used to be able to get 400 miles easily without a K&N?
To be honest I'd rather have more mileage over K&N sound 
question is, will it make a difference if the K&N has been used on there for a few years?

Just Drill your airbox and get a performance panel filter to get that noise back

Thats just it, dont want it!!
So you're saying even if i put the standard filter and backbox on, would still use the same amount of petrol per tankful?

just put a standard one back on. drive it for a bit. make ur mind up. and then either keep it or put a k&n back on

Don't drive the car hard and your mpg shouldn't be affected.

Ever thought that your air filter might be clogged up?
If it's been on the car more than 10,000 miles it could be clogged and starving your car of air.

A performance filter will flow more air for longer than a paper filter, unless the filter is a cotton-gauze filter, in which case a paper filter will out perform it.

Was getting extremely sluggish so bought a K&N recharge kit, cleaned it out over the weekend - Pepped up the throttle response a lot, I have having probs with the car stalling under acceleration, all sorted with the recharger
Engine runs cooler too

So you've not really done enough mileage to work out your MPG with the clean filter?
