I'm 18 and have just left school . I've always wanted to be a joiner , but haven't done enough about looking into it .
Any apprentice joiners on here ?
Is there as much demand for tradesmen as there were a year ago ? In the past year there was high demand because everyone was doing I.T courses etc , but have the tables turned leaving trade jobs full up ?

Go round some local building sites.....ask there, or maybe a local college they may have some contacts!!!

There is still a demand for tradesmen yes, and just now the money seems good as well if you do the work. Most places will want 16 yr olds ideally but they take people a lot older now as well. You could always get your foot in the door of a company by labouring for them while takin college classes at the same time and theres a good chance you'll get taking on when uv passed the course.

I'm a trainee Data Engineer it's a boring as fook trade but the money is brill for my age. You should get to your local connexions advisor they will help you out & give you all the details youy need

one of my mates does shopfitting and fitting kitchens he gets £££££ its a good job i did it for a while making hardwood windows doors and fitting them wish i didnt give it up now was good. theres lots of jobs u can do once ur quallified

I am a joiner been qualified for a yr and on 24k a yr. There are loads of jobs out there have never been out of work 4 a day since leaving school. The money is going up and their is a massive demand for joiners which will only get worse as not many people are doing it and lots are retiring. Make sure you get a really good apprentership and dont just get used for cheap labour.

Aye but ideally should these not be started at the age of 16 , making 18 a bit of a turn-off ?

we employed a few apprentices recentley, my boss is a fair bloke and gives people the chance.
got lots of brickys, plumbers, electricians in the making
our joiners have quite an easy life tho, as the timber is precut and marked out, just need a nail gun

ive just started an apprentichip doing joinery, took me ages to find a placement, your best bet is to join up at college full time and keep looking for a placement. also give your details to CITB, they usually find you placements.

At the citb , do you not have to do loads of tests for plumbing , electrician etc ?
What do you think of your apprenticeship so far ?

Barratts are your best bet for apprenticeships, best pay and bulk apprenticeship schemes.

all that happens with that citb is you have 1 day a week in college, and every so often someone comes out on site and sees how your getting on.
it is also more money than goin straight through college. you have to do exams to get all your certificates.
the apperntichip has been great, you learn more than been sat around in a classroom or learning in the workshops.

Forget all the full time college courses, you'll soon get found out when you hit the real world. It's easy to get a trade qualification at the moment but if you want to survive you should do it the proper way.
Find a small local joinery firm that takes apprentices, careers offices will know which ones do. Then do the proper 3years at college doing day/block releases. You'll learn bugger all at college but you need it for the paperwork. Be prepared for pretty crap wages at first, especially among the smaller firms but you'll get a much better training that way, a lot of the courses at the moment are just set up to fast track people through to try and meet a skills shortage but all we end up with is poorly qualified labour.
Don't be worried about being 18, most colleges will be happy to take you on, I started a year late myself and there were people older than me in my year.
After that you've got a job for life pretty much, the rise in popularity of timber framed houses means joiners are more in demand than ever and now command good wages with a lot better working conditions than the trade used to have.
