got a mate who has 1.4 16v sri and he can
smell fuel, and sumtimes it wont start unless he has his foot rite down on the peddle and it starts all ruff
just not rite at all
black smoke out exhaust to,sumtimes
he changed spark plugs, an it went better 4 about 30 mins
then the problem started again

could be an air leak somewhere....
the car is trying to fuel for air it thinks its getting, but is loosing it somewhere

..or its dodgy fuel control sensors. Try coolant temp sensor and lambda sensor as they both have a major effect on the fuel/air ratio
