tell her to get belt and water pump changed at the same time cos the pump is driven off the belt and as soon as the belt slackens so do the bearings in the pump

Depends, sometimes you dont need to change the water pump as there fine. remeber youve got a seperate tensioner on the newer engines, and the water pump isnt the tensioner like it is on some of the older 8v engines.
Cam belts need changing Every 40k or 4 years, Chain drives are usually 60k, although some dont need replacing at all .

I replace cam belt, rollers and tensioners every 30k.
My old Corsa 1.2 16v was chain driven, never changed it, and it did 63k when I traded it in!

Chain driven engines are pretty much zero maintenence.
My astra m4 1.6 16v had the belt done at 49k, and it had the water pump done at the same time because it was stiff as fcuk and was leaking.
The belt was also showing major sign of wear too.
Get it done quite lucky for me cos it was £75 inc vat for the kit and £25 or £30 fitting at vauxhall

All Vaux 16v and 24v vehicles manufactured from 97 to 02 need cambelt change every 4 years/40k. Timing chains shouldnt require replacement, unless your fitting a new engine etc, as long as they are maintained properly and regularly serviced etc
