Do garages pay much less than I would get selling it privately? It been in autotrader for a week at 1195 and i got interested, a couple viewings but never sold it. I want to buy the gsi this weekend and my mate said if he wants tomorrow would be convinient to go up, hes good with mechanics and I asked him if he could give it the once over, only thing is i need to sell my car first or at least know its sold before I commit myself to anything else, im not really willing to go under 800, is it worth asking about garages?

alot less mate, you taking about the gsi at £995 was it ? cannae mind, you will be lucky if garage will give you a few hundred for your car, they can't be arsed with trade in really...
Example, when i bought my 1st corsa 1.6 sport about 5 years ago, it was priced at £4495, I had a Immaculate Citreon AXGT for sale, with brand new white comp MO's etc tec....Car was stunning all they would give me for it was £200 I sold it privatly and bought the corsa..
You will not get good money on a trade in...
just read your above post, do you mean take your car into a garage and ak if they want to buy it...????
if you do they still wont give you anywhere near what you would get for it privately

There will be another GSI on the cheap.
You often see them go for this money now.

Its a loss really, the car is m reg, 107k miles, couple of minor scrapes, part of one of the arches is broken and in the boot and its scratched up as if its hit something. If these garages dont offer me enough i reckon il go up and if my mate says its all good i can always offer a px and just give them a couple of hundred on top of my car, but is that really worth it. Surely if anything they should be paying me? Might add he refused a straight swap.

Some do go cheap, perhaps not this cheap, but your right. Only its rare they pop up locally at all.

Your right. I must be careful and not get taken for a mug, I wont agree to anything that isnt worth it.

Well that was a waste of time, looked like it had been in an accident and the bonnet was nearly down to the metal, was some rust under the bonnet and was unoriginal, guessed it had been in an accident. So now the hunt for a gsi continues...
