I would hazard a guess at the rules also being different for emergency vehicles.

true! i phoned the transport police and asked about this and red at the back orange at the sides and white on the front is legal (although it would look a bit poo!)

i dont think the colour matters just as long as you cant see the bulbs then u will be fine!

I know they dont use neons but its blue and it may confuse some drivers but they are all illegal when driving with them on

Theres a Fire Engine that drives around York on a night with huuuggge speakers and red neons. I dunno whos it is, just goes around playing real loud music.
