Say if you sold a car on and the person who bought it bought it as a present for someone? That person now wants the car back from who they bought it for, and wants my help as Im proof they paid for it and its their car.
Are they able to do this if it got as far as court? 
I kinda just want to forget about it all though as its really got nothing to do with me any more

Tell them to fuck off. Don't bother getting involved. Well, thats what I would do - basically working off the principle that the car doesn't belong to you anymore and is therefore not your problem.

guess some bloke bought it for his gf and they split so he wants the car back 
if it's in her name then i don't think he can do much

Surely who's name is on the V5 is the owner of the car no matter where the money come from.

Told them I dont want anything to do with it as its not my car and dont want to get involved. If It was a friend or that it might be different but I dont even know them.
Not sure who's name is on the V5 just now, I would assume hers but dont know

If they approach their solicitors then you may need to give evidence as you were there when the transaction was done, unavoidable if it goes to court, though its more judge judy type of thing than county/high court

Who signed the logbook when he bought it? Whoever did is the legal owner of the car, and if his gf signed it then he's a dipshit. Just tell them that your not getting involved and he should know better than to give his gf a car for a present

It was his wife!
She put her name down but they might of changed it, not spoken to them in months.

not really anything to fo with you no more, but may be called as a witness if it went to court, would go to a civil court though not a crown court i think.

This is not true, the owner legally isn't the one on the log book. I came across this on some dvla form as my girlfriends dad bought a car for my girlfriend and put it in here name,. and i was checking if she could sell it without his permisson.

Just found the leaflet, its the UK Registration Certificate Guidence notes Code (INS160)
(please keep this booklet with the V5C registration Certificate)
First page, Section 1 Registered Keeper
The registered keeper is NOT (in bold) necessarilly the legal owner of the vehicle.
Further down;
The legal owner is;
The person/company who purchased the vehicle
the person who purchased the vehicle for their spouse/child etc.
oubt the court case will last long if it goes to court!
