is it ok to just push the 'off' button and let it close down automatically (it flashed up windows is shutting down etc.. then closes), as apposed to going through the start menu?

i didnt think it portects the HDD if you do that too much.. i always shut down the slow way.. unless the PC crashes on me

I think he means the fact that a brief press on the power button is actually just a shortcut to pressing shutdown on the start menu.
Don't hold it down for 5 seconds and actually power off the machine instantly -- anything held in the write cache won't be written to disk, plus it'll potentially screw your roaming profile (if you're at work at they enable these)...
