Greetings people – I've just discovered this site and thought it might be of some use – hence this question.

I've just bought my second Corsa ('99 1.4 16v sport) and although when I bought it, the guys at the garage assured me they had rectified a problem with the air con system, I aint altogther convinced.

If anyone out there has air con in their Corsa that they can explain to me exactly how it works and what tell-tale signs would indicate that it doesn't, I would be grateful.
I have a Honda Accord 2.0i with air con and when you turn that on – instant heat – this doesn't appear to be the case with the Corsa, so I can't tell wether. when it does warm up, if its just the heating system of the car normally (I was always impressed with my last Corsa (witout air con) at how quickly it heated up).

And before anybody asks, yes I have pulled the knob out to activate the A/C.

If it is nn-fuctioning, how easy is it to fix and does anyone have any suggestions.

cheers

ok not too sure what you are asking here because the heating and A/C system on the Corsa is seperate. Heating system is controlled by engine coolant flowing through a heater matrix which is then blown through the vents via a fan, the A/C system is controlled by condensers and radiator which sits with the engine radiator. If its not blowing A/C cold air or hot air, i would suggest there is a problem with pipework somewhere...

Air con works for heating as well, because the air coming out of the heaters when the air con on is normally condensed and so called fresher I use it to de-mist the windows.

so lets say this.

I get in my car this morning = freezing cold. I thinks "I know - AC"

Pull the AC knob out to activate the heat (dial set to hot)...

...do I need to turn the fan/blowers on as well or does the a/c do that?

I am trying to relate this to a different car so excuse the ignorance.

I was under the impression that a/c had nothing to do with heat? If I remember I'll have a look in my Astra car manual (ie. from Vauxhall, the one that came with the car) as I'm sure that's what it said in there?!

F**K IT!

I've bought a warmer jacket instead.
The light on the AC button comes on when you pull it out - therefore, when its out, its on.

Not quite sure we're on the same lines.

Aircon only cools...

The only reason you use aircon as well as the heater set to 'hot' is to demist -- aircon dehumidifies.

You'd only get instant heat from a car with a very big engine that gets hot very quickly, or you own a nice expensive Merc/Jag that has electric heaters too.

I'm pretty sure I've been in a Jag that had heating that didn't come from the engine coolant... Could be completely wrong though, but it's the sort of thing I could imagine in a luxury car (so you could have heat instantly).

I don't think the Accord would be that sophisticated -- it's probably more the fact it has a 2L engine that heats up a lot quicker

My ecotec 1.4 corsa heated up well quick, i always thought it was due to the engine almost filling up the engine bay so then heats up quicker.

Vauxhall actually had a stoke of greatness when it comes to this.

If the air con isnt working - the light in the switch WONT light up.

a/c in cars do not heat they only cool by a condensor and a compress which is usually driven buy a belt.

the only a/c that heats it the 1's u get in ur office which has a 4 way valve which reverses the cylce allowing it to heat

Conditioned air is good for demisting your windscreen regardless of its temparature, so long as its not too cold.

Some cars have electric pre-heaters which heat the blowers before the engine has a chance to warm up. Most Mercs.
