I have been informed that its possible to hack(mod) a xbox to allow it to play different formats. Does this also allow you to save to the HD? Or will i need to add a Mod Chip?

tis true i believe.
You'll want to get a larger hard drive and use that.
Never tried it myself, but i know an easy way to upgrade your hard drive in there.
You'll need a program called Dolly which copies all your drive+contents to a new drive and follow these instructions:
The specific instructions that worked for me are:
1. Create a Win9x boot disk and copy dolly.exe to it.
2. Set up my 2 HDD's on the same IDD channel
3. Make the original 40gb HDD as master and the new 120gb HDD as slave
4. Boot from your diskette.
5. Check the BIOS to ensure it can see both HDD's.
6. Run a:\Dolly xhd128: xhd129:
7. Wait HOURS till you're back at the a:\ prompt
8. Set the jumpers on the 120gb HDD back to master and reinstall to the Xbox housing.
as i say, never tried it, but if it dont work you can put your original drive back in.
I know sod all about Xboxes, but i know that is a correct way for copying hard drives without knowing the file format of the drives etc. (i.e it doesnt matter if its windows partitions/ linux partitions etc)

Easy to install even the solder chips on the xbox so the solderless should be a case of opening it up and putting it back together.
