Brad bottom line with them is they require 2 things to work and be upto date. 1 a paid subsription (around £60 a year) if you are fully paid up you can use the internet to get your Road Angel upto date. So its as upto date as you want it to be, IE I used to do mine every Sunday night. So in answer to your question it doesnt update automatically you have to plug it into your PC to update.
They all work in the same way, as all they use GPS to work out your postion and the pre-defined locations of speed camera and speed traps around the UKare loaded onto the map, when you are coming upto one it alerts you to it.
The Laser ones are a tough call some say you have a chance some dont, at the end of the day if it gives you 1 sec warning it could be enough to save your licence.
Buy one second hand and see how you get on with it.

I've got the new road angel compact. Its good but you have to buy the laser add on separately (£50 extra)
Its good but there are a few annoying things about it like it detects school zones at 10 o’clock at night.
Also it picks up speed cameras on near by roads. I was travelling on the motorway and it picked up a camera in a 30 zone!
Good things though, it lists mobile speed camera locations as black spots so that helps
I now know that my speedo is out by 3mph at 70 when compared to the gps

brad get the compact. The screen on the compact is much better than the RA2.
Lazer attachment isnt worth the money.

Laser detection isn't worth it.
As said, it only alerts you after the laser signal/beam has hit you. People who have been hit by lasers while speeding and got away with it are either lucky that the laser device didn't receive a valid signal back or they were speeding within the threshold.
My Road Angel 2 never alerted me to any mobile camera sites so i don't believe that they are updated throuhg the GPS database either.
Only time i got alerted to a mobile laser was when i got zaped by the laser.

Mate got a Compact today for his Polo. Takes a day for the locations to come through or whatever.
Can the USB>RoadAngel cable be bought seperatley? We've put it through a blank switch and hidden the cable behind the Dash. Will make it a pain to update every week!
