Is there any way I can prevent the lights from the street furneture e.t.c... from becoming big blurs in pictures like this? Could I use a filter over the lense?

where is the blur. the street lights are bright because in the darkenss they are a major source of light. if you expose for them then you'll get a darker picture

Thats not a blur as such, you've reached the peak of the dynamic range of the exposure, which has washed out all other definition.

The solution is to expose darker as Ross says, but then the pic will be darker. More definition potentially, but also more grain if you lighten it.

Personally I don't feel it harms the pic much.

agree with ian. top pic is nicely exposed. shame the whole of the church is not in shot

S/H introduces noise and affects colour if abused lol

Yes, unfortunately it does! Mostly when reducing shadows.
If the picture is not for print it's not a big problem if you use it before resizing though.

Yeah Ian, I ran a slight unsharp mask aswell...

I just popped the camera down on top of the waterfall thingie that you can see the reflection on in the foreground so the camera was steady and set the apature to what looked nice on the display and set the shutter speed to about 8 seconds. Not much science there

If I had a tripod I could have taken the picture further back and get more of the church and Selfredges in.... I had to rest the camera on something...

the ferris wheel is ace at night for some long exposures too,, late now but the markets in the centre around xmas are cool too

I've tried this before, but the problem I had is that to get all of the church in you end up with a lot of sky in the top left hand corner as the spire is so tall.

what you can use is a small apeture which will give a star burst look
