Top one. Basically for the 1gb memory. Or if you think you might be capable enough, buy the 2nd and buy a seperate memory stick (512mb) and install it yourself.

Also do you know speed of the hardrive? guessing its 5400rpm on the second however if its 7200rpm on the first deffo get that one.

How much are you likely to be storing on it?
I'd go for the one with the bigger hard drive because you don't sound like you'll be doing anything you need more memory for.

Wont be storing much....nothing major...gone for the 1GB Ram one as its more future proof....

And if I start to run out of space I can always buy an external HD as there cheap enough now...

1gb ram has made it no more future proof than 512 would have been but they are basically the same anyway.

What I mean is that its one less thing to worry about as I would have been looking to upgrade the RAM in the future...probably a lot sooner than I would fill the HD...

There would have been no reason to upgrade the ram.
Unless your usage needs change you'd never need more ram, hard drives fill up.
But as above it doens't really matter either way.

lappy HDs are bloody expensive, so its cheaper to buy sticks of ram for laptops - still not cheap, but cheaper

I personally would use the RAM more than the hard drive and you can move old stuff around on network shares, write to CD etc. if space gets right. RAM you use every day.
