How does it work??
Im buying a couple of things off ebay from America and possibly australia too, how does the tax bit work? Is there just one rate?
Will it all get tax or is it luck of the drawer?
Any info?

If they mark the box saying it's a gift then you pay no tax 
I have bought a few small things and not had to pay tax on them..

get them to mark the box as a gift mate, like Ed says! i bought a Mad Max poster from Australia once and it ended up costing a fortue in Tax!

You should of had them put them as a low value and as a gift then you wouldent of had to pay anything.
BUT as for Import Tax is dosent go off the weight it go off what the item is and how much its worth.
Car Parts are somthing like anything over £18 its 4% of the value
its differant from place to place, just ring up, nice people and really helpful.
When i did the Steel Rods from over seas for everyone on MIG i had to find all this out so we dident have to pay import tax

in america you pay 7% tax you can claim that back when bringing the part back into the counrty but the uk will then sting you with a 25% tax so best as said have it marked gift or get them to do you a recipt for under 100 dollars/100 pounds not sure and you also dont pay tax

Its not just amrk it as gift and its ok.
That sometimes works.
Its if its under 36 quid you don't pay extra.

You pay the usual 17.5% whatever the value of the goods are I think

Jambo i order stuff from the states, aus and Japan on a fairly regular basis, and sometimes it seems like a lottery.
In regard to marking it a "gift" or "no value" yes it will normally work but many companies won't do it, as it is illegal, for both the person sending and the person receiving, i do still ask though, but often they won't, i recently paid about £60 import on a £200ish item, and that was from the states, however i often don't pay any duty on items from Japan, I've had a very heavy item miss customs from Japan - figure that out,
but the costs can be a lot, i think it normally works out at cost + shipping, then vat and duty are added onto these, if its from the states i normally budget about the cost in dollars, and if it misses customs and comes in cheap, bonus!
if its from Japan / aus i add about 50% onto the cost and again hope for the best.

Ticking the gift box doesnt always work. When I got a few race trolley jacks in from america, the first batch got through but the other two were taxed even though marked as a gift. Stupid woman at parcel force said its random. If that the case parcel force should tax everthing as they took a £8 handling fee.
I think as long as they are one offs and come in packages without any company details on you should be ok

Marking it as a gift makes fook all difference if the value is declared as over £32. You will have to pay import tax and Vat on the full amount above that regardless if its a gift or not.
If you dont believe me fine but i've been working with imports for the past 7 years.
If it comes via courier (UPS,Fed-Ex,DHL etc) then you will have to pay it plus a handling charge, if it comes postal service you may get away with it but as its such a high value then you prolly wont.
You can ask the shipper to declare a low value but its a federal offence to falsefy paperwork so dont expect them to help.

I bought some binoculars from canada, they were just short of 700 quid and i had to pay about 50-60 quid import fee's. This was about 6 months ago.

For all those saying amrk it up as a gift... HMR&C aren't stupid ya know, thye do check big items, anything heavy/big is unlikely to be a gift an the'll just hold it until they find out what it is!
