What is your definition of a car that has been "thrashed" ?
I mean people go on about "I'd never buy that it's been hammered.." or whatever, but they drive their cars hard and don't class their own cars as hammered 
THe only thing I can think of is not giving the oil time to warm up before redlining it?

i will always make sure my car has enough time to get above 90 degress before going high in revs, and make sure it is cool when i turn it off, if fan is on i never turn it off till a min after it goes off.

not booting it from cold
arnt rev limiters there to stop you blowing the car up,there for anything after the limiter isnt safe?

Yes, but it's not meant to be hit on a cold engine.

engines are tested to in the region of 14,000 rpm if not more but restricted to what is safe

u can still blow and engine up, even with a rev limiter.

so long as its warmed up, its safe enough to use the limiter in every gear always tbh, they are far from dangerous. yes, wear rate will increae, but only margionally, and since most engines will do 200+k if looked after i dont really see it as an issue.
i drive my cars very hard, but as has been said, warm them up, maintain them properly and let them cool off when youre done. id be more wary of a car thats been owned by an old dear, had half its oil changes missed, filled with the next door neighbours 20w50 multigrade cos it was handy and never taken over 2krpm, then a dealer maintained car thats been used properly

ive jsut got a new run around its a mitsubishi carisma with 191k on the clock im givin it a hard time now it stil drives perfect fuck knows when the oil was last changed etc

Yeah but with proper servicing, maintenance and letting the oil warm up first the chances of this are very slim 
Anyway back to the original question 
I take it thrashed means redlined from cold? That's what I seem to think from this thread

Do you mean oil or water to temprature?
Your water can be upto temp, but your oil might still be a bit cool!

Oil. I always let the water get upto 90 degrees then give it another mile or so to make sure the oil is upto temp.
