Notepad, or something similar if you want to learn the coding behind it quickly as you have to code everything.

If you want to not really learn the coding but design in a WYSIWYG formats then software suchs as abobes Golive, Marcomedia Dreamweaver, and Microsoft Frontpage.

As for quilifaction there are a few but i would imagine a good portfolio would be better in job interviews.

Books such as Dreamweaver 8 for Dummies, HTML 4 for Dummies, and Sams Teach Yourself HTML and XHTML in 24 Hours are a good start

best bet is to get the trial version straight from macromedia and then if you like it/use it convert to the full program (google is your friend!)

as mentioned above, Dreamweaver and Photoshop.

you can find both on any torrent site.
then head over to Free Web Templates (ignore pop-ups) download a nice free template, and play around with it, change the pictures/buttons etc change content.

imo its an excellent way to learn for a complete beginner. you can have fun, add javascripts etc too.

No one uses notepad anymore. It's gotten far too complicated to do it like that now. Not saying you couldn't but it would take you ages

I highly recomend you get the 30 day trial of Dreamweaver 8. It does everything using XML and CSS, it does WYSIWYG editing very well as well as plain coding. I tought myself using Dreamweaver MX which is severl years old and have recently moved on to 8, it's fantastic!

Depends what you're used to I suppose. I'm stuck in my ways. Tried using DW, took five times longer to do simple stuff and I still wasn't sure I had done it right, plus the software takes up loads of memory and leaves random files about the place.

I would recommend it for many other circumstances though.

I agree with ian on this, stuff like DW looks great and all but it takes ages to do simple things, and yes it half munchies at your PC when do a few simple tasks.

Personally i use HtmlPad - just a simple editor, but has preset styles for different website file types - php, asp, html, xml etc

i do this for a living and i use dw, really fast for layout complicated sites and using the code view is fast for simple ones, intergration with ftp and testing server control makes life much easier.
perhaps it makes sense to learn using notepad first (which i did) just so u can understand whats going on
