Are they secure enough to handle the bass going thru them just on the parcel shelf or do you need to strenghten the shelf so it doesn't rattle ?

when i had them in my first car i was advised to reinforce the shelf with 18mm MDF because people told me that when they are turned up loud the shelf would wobble with them and so decreasing their effectiveness, as all speakers/subs should be kept rigid.

so i got a board of 18mm MDF and cut a piece the size of the underside of my parcel shelf and bolted it securely with 6 bolts.
doing this made the shelf hevey and the boot would no longer open by itself on the gas lifter thingys so i had to help it up. (no big deal but i jus thought i'd tell you)

overall i did not hear any improvement in sound quality (but this was the early days of my car audio so i had untrained ears)
also when i opened my boot other people saw that i had a chunk of wood bolted to my parcel shelf (but you will probably do a tidyer job)

sorry for the essay i guess im just bored

hope it helps mate

18mm MDF is probably overkill for 6x9's in a shelf, but yes you should strengthen the shelf,

people saying stuff like this is getting really old
cant you just accept that not everybody cares about having perfect sound quality.

the fact is that 6x9s play the full freq range and can greatly improve the factory sound system

its not just that. you have to cut up your parcel shelf, and you move all the sound to the rear? you drive from the fron dont you?

and people will keep saying it until people take notice.

spend a bit more and get some speakers/comps hidden away in your front doors

1-they sound better
2-you dont have to cut wholes in anything
3-they wont attract theiving cnuts

I think thats the point that b4l is trying to get across, some people just want to spend as little as possible and have something that sounds half decent,

however I totally agree with your points, components sound much better, better fit, and you can't see them as easy as 6x9s on a shelf which is probably a good thing, its just some people dont really care about excellent SQ,

Imo 6x9s are a good solution in some scenarios

I already have comps in the front worth £150

But i like a lil bit of sound to come from all around me.not just the front although i do have around 70% / 80% of the sound coming from the front set.

I may just go for a sub and amp front comps at same time tho and forget about 6x9s

if you have good comps then i'd go for the sub/amp and forget the 6x9s, and probably ditch the rear speakers also,

if space is an issue then get a nice 10 inch sub in the boot, can easily be positioned out of the way if you make your own enclosure!
