Yes you can do it. I did it for a few years with Vodafone. If you threaten to leave get put through to retentions. Negotiate a new contract and handset and ask to keep your number and roll over to the new contract when the old one ends. I'm just about to do it on 02 as well when my phone is out.

You cant go contract - contract with 02.
However, you can go contract-pay as you go- contract

I just upgraded, went from Online 100 to Online 200 equivalent, phoned up to get my old Number put onto my New 3G sim, took 2 mins on the phone and an hours wait. Sorted.

just rang orange.
Right, this has been cleared up. These '3rd' party companies that sell you the contracts make commission on selling you the contact so they will not be happy to upgrade you. ive just stamped my feet down in an email so i will wait to hear back.
I can upgrade through orange and keep my number for £50.

You can port your number out to another network's pay as you go and then port back to Orange on the new contract but that's the only way to do it and it's a bit of a hassle.

As I said previously you can transfer your number. I have just done it 10 mins ago. Old O2 contracts up next month, just sorted a new O2 tariff and 12 month contract. Keep my number and got a K800i
The retentions department can do this...
